Brown

I have discovered that Frederick Irwin was the son of Margaret Brown, and have discovered a little about her and her family though there is more work to do.

  • John Brown, m. Isabella Chisolm, 6 April 1799
  • ...Margaret Brown, 1815-1902
  • ......Frederick Irwin, ill. s.o. Margaret Brown, born 5 June 1842, in Gilligate, Hexham
  • ......Margaret Brown, ill. d.o. Margaret Brown, born bef. 28 April 1841, Hexham
I assume that these people were both born to the same Margaret Brown.

Margaret is shown as Peverak in the 1881 census but as Peverell in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. In 1881, she is just a visitor, but by 1891 she is describing herelf as 'mother in law' (Frederick had died by then, and Frances was head of the household) and in 1901 she calls herself a grandmother. All the censuses consistently put her date of birth in 1815, and her marriage certificate names her father as John Brown.

I have also discovered that Margaret Brown married George Peverell on 1 February 1864.

I also know that her uncle was a Charles Chisolm and that he fought at the battle of Trafalgar - he was on HMS Prince. And I have a John Brown marrying Isabella Chisolm in 1799.
